Ubud Lifeline
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Ubud is an idyllic hill town that everybody is investing. However, there are issues in between that the people are trying to find its own solution.
The issues that I’m tackling on are
-
The traffic system
-
The conflict between the local & the developers
-
Develop Ubud in a way to maintain the culture within
I’m looking for a solution by thinking about this in a futuristic proposition, also thinking about a project the involved a new & revolutionary approach in urban planning.
It might need some king of infrastructure that sits over the top of Ubud.
By having this infrastructure, it would
-
Minimise the demolition for existing buildings
-
No to purchasing rice fields
On policy manner, we’ll introduce a rule by saying “No Big Buses”, just small vehicles and scooters in and around Ubud.
I’m proposing a new Bus stop station, for the buses that come to Ubud and also a chairlift station.

Precedents
Looking at precedence, I looked at a cable car project done in Caracas.
The problem in the site was that the person who lives inside is very difficult to go out to the city and the people in the city are very difficult for them to go enter.
Rather than widen up the streets for more cars to circulate, they basically place a cable car station, and the cable car then gets them to wherever they wanted to go.
Guggenheim Museum was also one of the precedents looking at how circulation works in architecture. It’s interesting to create a circulation that circulation from top to bottom, rather than walking from bottom to top.
The Cable Car Station in Taronga Zoo also inspired me to create a new perspective and experience that will bring you around the zoo.
Topography
To propose a chairlift around Ubud, we start by looking at the topography on the site of Ubud. The topography is significant between down here in monkey forest and up there at Ubud palace.
I’m taking this opportunity to place my main station down at the monkey forest, with a bus park for the buses.

The circulation of the chairlift was formed through looking at the idea of creating a boundary between the old and new Ubud.
Create zoning between the tourist attraction places and the local favourite places in Ubud.
Look in detail on the potential opportunity to select the station location.
The station selected refers back to the local & the tourists needs.

This chairlift will take you around 45mins to complete the whole journey.
The circulation will bring you to the hidden places where tourist can’t experience just by using vehicle or scooters or even walking.
It will bring you to the cliff area, the paddy field, the river, the town, the jungle, etc.

Station Description
With this loop, there are 3 stations and these stations also able to adapt with another program.
For Station One, it’s a station with a bus park. It gathers all the buses into one area and then get the tourist from the buses to the chairlift. Currently the street is underdevelop, this proposal includes widen up the street and also proposing a new bridge to connect the site.
For Station Two, it’s a station with a stage. Performing art plays a very important role in the culture of Ubud, and there are many performing stage around in town. With the problem of the town being secluded, people are having performance stage on the roof area. To tackle this issue, I’m taking this opportunity to create a performance stage, and the contours of the site allow me to create a buffer between the audience and performance. With the river in between, this can then became a new experience.

For Station three, the site around was secluded with one/two star hotels that doesn’t have facilities. I’m proposing a station with leisure for share amenities to the guests. The site around the station was interesting; it has got a paddy field situated on the right side and also a river on the left side. I’m taking this opportunity to extend the paddy field and adding up an artificial river in to the building as a design response.

Adaptation of Columns
We looked at how locals are trying to adapt the columns. We think about it in 3 different categories,
-
Sports & Recreation - Spotlight for futsal at night, Basketball
-
Local Adaptation - Vertical Plantation, Observatory Deck
-
Tourist & Business - Advertisement Board, Seating Space
